Have you sensed hearing difficulty?
Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) is the gold-standard diagnostic test to evaluate your hearing sensitivity.
What is Pure Tone Audiometry?
Pure Tone Audiometry is a behavioral hearing test that measures how well you can hear sounds at different pitches and volumes. At Denoc Hearing, this essential test helps us assess:
- Threshold level of hearing
- Degree of hearing loss: mild, moderate, severe, or profound
- Type of hearing loss: conductive, sensorineural, or mixed
- Hearing configuration: unilateral (one ear) or bilateral (both ears)
The patient is asked to respond whenever they hear a tone. The lowest intensity level (in decibels) at which they respond 50% of the time is recorded as their hearing threshold.
Testing is carried out across a frequency range of 250 to 8000 Hz, covering the full spectrum of speech sounds
Clinical Procedure
PTA is conducted in two stages:

1.Air Conduction Testing:
- Sounds are delivered via headphones or ear inserts
- Detects hearing thresholds through the outer and middle ear

2.Bone Conduction Testing:
- A bone vibrator is placed on the mastoid bone
- Measures hearing through the inner ear directly
- Masking noise may be used to isolate ear responses when necessary

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
PTA detects your hearing threshold and helps diagnose the degree and type of hearing loss in each ear.
Not at all. It is a non-invasive, painless procedure involving listening to tones through headphones.
PTA requires patient cooperation, so it’s suitable only for children old enough to follow instructions. Younger children may need tests like OAE or BERA instead.
